Home
Welcome! My name is Jim Kelly and this is my home on the web. Here you’ll find samples of my work as a freelance writer—articles and reviews I’ve written for nationally distributed magazines Chart (now www.chartattack.com), Canadian Musician, Toronto’s Eye Weekly, and others, as well as assignments I’ve done for companies and organizations such as Chapters.ca, SOCAN, and the JUNO Awards—and samples from my work as a staff copywriter for Columbia House Canada and associated companies.
Writer
You can read my articles and interviews with some of Canada’s and the world’s biggest bands and most-beloved musicians, including Alanis Morissette, Nickelback, The Tragically Hip, Ron Sexsmith, Neko Case—not to mention Hollywood actress Neve Campbell—as well as concert reviews of acclaimed artists such as Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams and the late Elliott Smith.
You can also read my coverage of events such as international bike courier races, exclusive secretly-held charity rock concerts, music festival showcases (from legendary to lame), and a rare press conference held by a certain ex-Beatle. (And guess whose question to Sir Beatle became the basis for the lead in stories filed by most of the large daily newspapers and major wire services. Ahem.)
Copywriter
I’ve also been a full-time staff copywriter for more than 11 years (Senior Copywriter for nearly six years). I’ve produced engaging and actionable copy for customer magazines and catalogues, commercial websites and direct mail projects. I’ve created promotional copy, display copy, features of various kinds, e-mails, website copy, social media content (Twitter, Facebook), e-newsletters, brochures, voice-blast scripts, customer letters and more.
Blogger
Don’t forget to check out my blog, JimTypeBlog, which I hope to update fairly regularly.
So go ahead, poke around. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
